Our Mission

At AIFWD, we’re focused on driving artificial intelligence forward. AI is already making a huge impact in the lives of billions of people every day, and its influence will only grow in the coming years. Despite its ubiquity, however, at the moment the power to determine the course of future AI innovations is held by a select few.

According to Stanford’s 2021 AI Index Report, 8 out of every 10 tenure-track faculty members in the world’s top computer science departments are male, with females accounting for less than 18% of new CS PhD graduates in North America. In the US, this lack of diversity extends to race and ethnicity as well, with African Americans and Hispanics making up less than 7% of new AI PhD grads.

We’re looking to change this: our mission is to work towards ensuring that as AI grows, it better reflects the people it serves and benefits from their unique perspectives. We see the place of greatest impact at the beginning: education. The more people from diverse backgrounds that have the skills and expertise needed to break into AI, the greater the chance this field will start representing everyone.

What We Offer

To begin making the AI field more accessible, we are committed to providing thoroughly researched, cited, and expert-approved information relevant to those learning more about artificial intelligence, getting started down an AI career path, or progressing in a career that’s already underway. This means publishing:

  • Useful, digestible background articles about important aspects of AI for those at all stages of their careers.

  • Vetted program recommendations for bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD programs, as well as bootcamps.

  • Proven tips for making degree applications and resumes stand out from the crowd.

Our Values

With everything we publish, we are guided by the following values:

Accessibility

AI should be a big — if demanding — tent. While we can’t make some of the concepts central to artificial intelligence any less complex, we strive to express them more simply. Jargon is intrinsic to such a technical field, but when we use potentially unfamiliar terms, we gloss them in the hopes of removing barriers to entry.

Transparency

To continue providing helpful and relevant content, we partner with sponsors, some of whom pay us a small fee when our readers engage with an educational opportunity they are offering. When we recommend a sponsor’s program, we will always clearly disclose this relationship. You can read more about our partnering policies below.

Trustworthiness

Our success is measured by the success of our readers. With that in mind, all the information we provide is painstakingly researched and, where necessary, vetted by artificial intelligence and machine learning experts. While we might receive financial incentives for pairing interested users with quality programs, we don’t enter partnerships with these programs unless we feel confident the programs will help students succeed in the AI field.

Our Policies

How do we make money?

We partner with educational providers and may receive compensation when you request information from them or engage with their website (such as attending an admissions appointment or starting an application). In this, we strive to be discerning and transparent. We will only partner with schools and educational providers we would go to ourselves, and we’ll tell you when we are suggesting a partner-institution.
